Classroom Pics

Clip to ScrapBook #1

There's been a discussion on the themes board about posting pictures of your classroom and it's been fun to see others' rooms.

Do any of you other third grade teachers out there have pictures of your rooms to share? I love getting to see what other teachers have done and would like to see some third grade rooms!

Here's a link to some of my photos:

Building

Our original part of the building is 50 yrs. old. My classroom is from the early 90's addition, then we just opened up 7 new classrooms, a new gym, office, and music room this past year. I'm a little jealous because the newest rooms are about twice as big as mine... I still have a great room, though!

This was my 3/4 class this year. I am in the process of changing the room for a 2/3 next year. I'll post those photos when I get them.

Thank you for posting this! I love to get ideas from other classrooms! There are soooo many creative teachers out there! As soon as I get some work done, I'll share.

I just saw my classroom this morning for the first time so now my wheels are spinning! I'm excited!

Hi Dtrabilsy,

I have been searching for a plain, sturdy chair like that for my meeting area this summer. Where did you get yours? I recently sent my old one to the dump. It was very comfy but over 20 years old and not very supportive.

Your mail center looks like the cardboard type. Is it, and how do you think it will hold up?

I noticed in one of the pictures there are pictures of your students eyes and hands. What are the writing pieces that go with these pictures?

Karyn3rd...
The chair was there when I inherited the room. Sorry, couldn't begin to tell you where it came from. It is quite comfy! In fact, when the principal comes in for visits, we allow him to sit in that chair.

glinda...
The mail center is cardboard. This was the 2nd year using it. It has held up nicely. Would have loved to had something smaller and stronger, but couldn't afford that.

Baseball bulletin boards

I loved your baseball bulletin boards, dtrabilsy! I am thinking of doing a baseball theme myself this year and was wondering if you could let me know what your boards said. Some of the wording was too small to read from the pictures. Thanks for sharing!

Coug Gal...
I assume you are talking about the smaller bulletin board.

The board title is: Play Ball

The smaller wording is: Game 1. Each quarter is a different game number. We play four games.

One page is the "Baseball Rules". The other is "Classroom Expectations"

Then under that, each team has a rositer page. This is where I mark their bases, runs, and strikes.

I run a sports oriented classroom. I don't have any pictures to share, but I will be stealing some of these great ideas I see on this thread! I need some clarification on your "Game 1", "quarters", and "team roster". Is this how you manage centers, groups? Also, are the baseball rules the rules you have set up for your classroom or really baseball rules?

Steal away...

My kids are set up as teams. Each person on the team gets bases for different things...turning in homework, compliments from teachers, etc. 4 bases = a run. For every run they get, they get $10 in baseball bucks. At the end of the quarter, they can use their baseball bucks to get into a baseball movie and buy popcorn, candy, soda, etc. They get strikes for poor behavior. 3 strikes = an out. For every out they get they get $10 in baseball bucks taken away. The baseball rules are the rules for the classroom, not real baseball rules.

Check this out...this is the discipline policy.

Hope this helps.

I love how you have the weeks broken into innings. Very clever! Is it hard to keep up with all of the bases that your kids earn? How do you manage all of that without going crazy?

Ahhh...that is the best part of it. I have team captains each quarter, and they keep track of bases, runs, strikes and outs in a personal folder. Then I take that information weekly and put it up on the board. The kids are very good about making sure the captain keeps up with all of it. Makes them responsible. Our goal in fourth grade is to make the kids responsible for their education.

Some years the kids are better than others, but if you teach them correctly from day one, it seems to work.

I have pics on my website at www.mrscopelandsclass.com. I am way behind on updating! I never got around to posting pics from this past school year. I had a rough year with my class and also had a difficult pregnancy! I'd like to think I could work on it this summer, but so far I haven't been able to do anything but tend to my 23 month-old and 4 month-old!

Here's mine from my 3rd year of teaching 4th grade. It was a Catholic School, hence the crosses!

Did you have those shelves built or did you purchase them somewhere? If so, where. They are a great size for the baskets.

I have been eyeing up the idea of rain gutters under my chalkboard, but I have cinderblock walls. I can't completely tell from your picture if you do, but it looks like you might. If you do have cinderblocks, how did you get those up there? (P.S. my husband is handy with a drill and other tools, so I'd be happy to put him to work in August).

Thanks!

You are soooo lucky you can start setting up your room for next year. We had to pack everything up and get everything (except larger furniture) off the floors. All posters had to come down to powerwash the walls...lol. I had to cover my bulletin boards with plastic trash bags and pray they don't get ruined.

oh well. i love the character of your room!

I love your lounge area. I still have 4 days of school left and I have to pack everything away, including clearing the wall. I take no chances because some years they do repaint and everything will get trashed.

We are allowed one week before school starts to began working on our rooms. It is never enough time!

Wrigley - where did you get the fabric (I think) map of the United States that is on your wall? I teach fourth grade and our Social Studies curriuculum is of the U.S. regions. I've been looking for a fabric map - I found a fabric world map, but not a U.S. Could you share where you found yours? Thanks so much. Your room is awesome! Yours, too, MsTeacher!

I've shown mine before, so I apologize if this is a repeat for some of you. It's a jungle theme, and unfortunately I can only attach one picture at a time. I tried putting them all together but the file is too big.

Here's my door........

Here's my library/reading corner. A few months after I took this picture, I started labeling the books by A.R. level, then I took them out of their genre bins and put them on the shelves like a regular library. It was much easier to find books on their level that way! I should've taken another picture, but I forgot!

Here are a few pictures of my classroom that are on my website. Since we are having our entire building retrofitted with new computers, etc. this summer. I had to take everything down and pack it up. It will look different when the next school year begins. I post updates then.

Go to our Class Photo Album.

I love your room. Your video conferencing on your class Site is so neat. I would love to do that one day. We are in contact with Austria and England right now. If you would, please tell me how you set up your video conferencing.

I am about to take a walk to the park with my son, but I will answer your questions shortly. I begin a job as a Scholastic Teacher Advisor, so I will be adding all of my resources soon and information. Sign fonts. Usually Verdana, Tabitha, and Tahoma work for me. I'll check on that and offer the Word Version soon. I will add video conference info. tonight also.

Video Conference Q- I updated my video conference page with info. on how we set it up:
www.bar.rcs.k12.tn.us/teachers/bunyia/madrid.html

Sign Font Size-The font size is hard to explain. Offically it is 143 with bubble type writing in Times Roman (which makes it easier to read), but with Printshop it depends on how you place the text box. Mine took up half the page (flipped). I am working on attaching all of my signs and documents on our site in the next week or so...so maybe I can save you from my confusing explaination and you can just open it up and change it!

I am amazed at the size of your classrooms. Once I do 6 groups of 4 or 5, I don't have much room for anything else. Any suggestions?

I Wonder Board

Clip to ScrapBook #59

Could you provide more information about your I Wonder board...Does each student have a certain "space" for their sticky note? Do they write what they wonder at the beginning, middle, end, or throughout the entire book they are reading?
Thanks! Your classroom and site are awesome!

I Wonder Board
Old 06-25-2008, 06:32 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #60

I have a couple of ways we address questioning while reading...including before, during, and after charts, but the "I Wonder" board is broader across content areas. Essentially, any sort of questions a student is curious to find out an answer to, they place it on one of the post-it notes. Many of those questions pop up during a reading conference or from their reading, but we use this across the curriculum. About once a week, a student or parent volunteers to research the answers and answers the questions for the entire class. The post-it notes make it easy to grab and take to the library or tech lab. I really learned some interesting things along the way (e.g. What is money made of?...Is Google the largest number in the world?).

The students really depended on the board. In fact, it was the first thing my students asked me to put back up after state testing when our walls were bare.

To get it started- The first time I used the board, I gave each student a post-it note and had them record any questions they had for a read-aloud we completed. We sorted the questions out, answered the ones we could, and posted the ones we didn't know for later research. From there, we just continued to use it for the year.

For an example of a full "I Wonder" board:
http://www.bar.rcs.k12.tn.us/teachers/bunyia/wonder.jpg

Here's a tiny picture on before, during, after questioning we have used for a mini-lesson- http://www.bar.rcs.k12.tn.us/teacher...gquestions.jpg

Hope this helps

I love your classroom! I love your nonfiction reading area with fish tank, gutter shelves (an idea I am going to steal) and I also love the tires set up as seating.

teach72beach,

Each child had a chart (year '05-'06) or their name on the poster (year '06-'07) and they received a sticker for each table they passed off. This helped both the students and myself keep up with testing.

Tatum,

I can't wait to get my classroom ready for this upcoming year because I'm going back to my racing theme and back to some of the same furniture arrangements as I had the year of '06-'07. Last year I tried the movie them but just missed the racing stuff so much. Several students were disappointed when they found out I had changed the theme as they knew I decorated with racing. The first thing is to bring back those tires! The students love them! Unfortunately, the fish tank is gone. It sprung a leak and mad a HUGE mess. The sound of the water running was so relaxing!

Hope you have a great year!

My discipline chart:

I got the idea from another PT member last summer! I just tried the idea this past year and I LOVED it! I plan to use it again this year.

If a child misbehaves, they move their pin. The first step is a warning and nothing really happens (it's mainly a reminder to me that I already gave them a warning!). If they move it again, they miss recess. If they move it again, they miss recess and I contact parents (either email, phone, or note). If it goes beyond that, it's an automatic office referral (usually only happens once in a school year, thankfully!). When school is over that day, I have a binder where I jot down any names of kids who moved their pin (not warnings) so I'll know at a glance when I fill out their Graded Paper folder (small place for discipline).

On the right side of the poster you can see what each place means: warning, straight face, frowning face

It's SO much lower maintenance than anything else I've tried.

That's pretty similar to what I currently do, except I write names on board for warnings and put checkmarks, but I think I'd rather get that off the board and onto a chart somewhere else around the room. Thanks for replying!

I also have these in my room. I found it a few years back on readinglady.com. Look for the link that says "Decoding B-Board":
www.bar.rcs.k12.tn.us/teachers/bunyia/research_articles.html

Mrs. Uppman asked for my version last February and she runs the ##################.com site. She created her own, and although they are pretty much the same you can visit her site for downloading as well. I believe the pictures you are referencing came from her site.

Visit readinglady.com for their photos as well.

FYI- It won't allow me to provide her site address. Yahoo will work though.
