Help - new student!!!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I'm at a loss right now. A new student just started 2 weeks ago and he's reading at a early 1st grade level. I've done some assessments (spelling inventory, running records, sight word inventory, etc.), but I just don't know where to begin. We have 8 weeks left and I think I'm running out of steam. His meeting is coming up in another week but I'm just at a loss as to how to begin working with him. He certainly is not reading at grade level so the basal stories will not be beneficial unless in a read aloud form. Any help or suggestions????

work with a first grade teacher? Find out when they do their reading block and maybe he can go to them for instruction at his level?

If he's moved in from another school inside your district, I would contact his previous teacher ASAP. It's possible they are changing schools to avoid retention. If you have an intervention team in place at your school, refer him as soon as you can. That way, things can be done now if possible, or he can be fast-tracked for next school year.

Could you buddy him up with a nurturing kid in your classroom to sit beside him and help him throughout the day? There always seems to be a few of those mother hen types in a classroom that would welcome watching over and help a new kid. I always like to assign buddies to my new kids to stay with them for a week or longer.
