I got a sub that is a retired second grade teacher and the kids were awful.I have had her many times before this year.they would not listen or stay on task and I got a horrible note from her telling me she may not sub for this class again for the rest of the year. She has great management but the kids were talking way too much and were all wanting to go to the bathroom one after the other.Do you have any advice what I should do to keep this from happening again?

Consequences

Students should be reminded that they are accountable for their behavior with a sub. Let them write a list of acceptable and unnacceptable behavior when you are absent. Discuss as a class. Ask them as a class to agree on an appropriate consequence for misbehavior with a sub. Maybe this will help!!

Take in a pink box of donuts and set it on your reading table. Read the note to the class and then let them know the box was bought this morning in hopes of receiving good news; however, since they were so out of control, the donuts will be enjoyed by the teachers instead.

Yes, a form of bribery for next time, but hey, it works!

I'd also give a consequence to those named specifically. If none were named on their own, the whole class should need a consequence ~ maybe a recess in at their desks with their heads down (a short recess because you are punishing you too!!)

TeacherTim - I like the idea of using the doughnuts to bribe the kids with .

Sclnewbie - I also think that they need to know before they have a substitute teacher that you and the sub will communicate with each other; therefore, you will know whether or not they behaved for the sub and that they will face the consequences as if you were there.

Hey, it's the end of the year --- Promise the class a No Homework Day if there are no sub complaints.

I too like the idea of kids spending their recess to write a apology to the sub.

As horrible as it is...I completely bribe the students when I know I'm going to be gone. I have a very difficult class this year, so difficult that a sub walked out one day that I was gone. Last week I was traveling out of state for a wedding, so I told the students that whoever had a good note from the sub would get a pizza party when I came back, and those that did not get a good note would not get a pizza party. The good news is that I only had 2 students with a bad note over a total of two days, the bad news is that I had to buy a lot of pizza!
