Calendar & Common Core Math

Our school adopted Go Math/commom core for this fall. I was wondering will you continue the daily calendar? how would you incorporate common core math skills in the calendar? What are some ways you are reviewing the common core math through the calendar? What are ways I can plan? Thanks!!!

Calendar skills are common core--a calendar is like a big graph that you must know how to "read." Other parts of calendar time, like finding patterns, using a hundred chart, and counting days in school are all skills under common core. I am trying to fit in my calendar time as well--we will have Go Math, too. In the past, I've done a special focus each day during calendar time--Money Monday, Tally Mark Tuesday, Word Problem Wednesday, Time Thursday and Fun Math Friday (a pot pourri or misc. skill). These are always QUICK and involves exposure over time!
I love that GO Math seems to be stepping back and drilling key skills (i.e. ADDITION and SUBTRACTION!!) Our kiddos really need that.

I absolutely love the idea of skill focus for each day. Although I know repetition is so important in first grade, calendar can begin to become a bit too regular. Adding this slight change will help to spice mine up for sure!

Thanks for the ideas about a different focus for each day of the week.

Melissa,
Would you please be so kind and tell us a little bit more of how you implement Monday Monday, etc within your calendar time? I am very curious how you do it. Is it done whole group? Do you have cards that students choose and then answer? How much time do you use for each activity? Do you use the date of that day in each activity? Please explain. Thanks

Mine is really loose, I just randomly place a problem usually. I do this whole group with the Hiker of the Day getting to write the answer while the others share their answer with a partner. Tally marks are drawn for the date. I start easy any give harder problems later in the year.

It is all very quick. I try to give repeated exposures so hopefully it will finally sink in with those that struggle.

Hope this helps!
