To get my class interested in reading I like to read them funny books like Sideways Stories from Wayside School or Clementine. Any similar suggestions?

I've read Beezus and Ramona, and I just started Pippi Longstocking with them. I think the BFG is a good one too.

The Sam series (All About Sam, See You Around Sam, Zooman Sam) and the Fudge books (Judy Blume) are always hits with my kids.

At the beginning of the year Judy Moody, The Zack Files (Any of them) Julian Dream Doctor to get them interested in these series. Love reading Henry Huggins, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Superfudge-- all lead to more in the series.

Do they have to be chapter books? The ones listed above are fabulous but there are also a lot of really good short books to read.

My kids just beg for me to read Dan Gutman's Weirder My Weirder School MyWeird Schools Series... we've had lots of great discussions about idioms, voice,. They love the titles: Miss Mary is Scary. Oh Valentine, We've Lost Our Mind. Short chapters 12 in book so quick read.

Chapter Books

Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant is a beautiful story that has many laugh out loud funny parts. We read it every year.

Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillo

I second Mrs. Piggle Wiggle (they laugh and laugh, even though this book is ancient!)

Lulu and the Brontosaurs by Judith Viorst

Maybelle in the Soup

Pippi Longstocking

Not funny, per se, but books that really hooked readers and made them beg for more- The Bad Beginning (Series of Unfortunate Events), The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (so, so, beautiful), The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, From Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nihm, and The Borrowers.

Random series books that kids love-
Horrible Harry, they love when he talks about being in love with Song Lee
Junie B. Jones and the Sneaky Peaky Spying- I know it's not high quality literature, but it really is funny and hooks lots of kids on reading the series themselves.

And I totally agree with the previous poster about picture books!

For younger students, Pete the Cat is a class favorite and so is anything by Mo Willems! Some of his works include "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus", "Knuffle Bunny" and "Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed."

Read alouds that aren't chapter books-- so many it would be hard to list them all.

Tomie dePaola books ( Both picture and chapter) This author writes many personal narratives. My favorites are Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs and Now one foot, Now the other. Both are about grandparents.

Walter the Farting Dog
David Shannon books
Kevin Henkes books
Greg Tang Math books
