Beach Glass, I used a slide rule all through high school and college...bought a very expensive (hundreds of dollars!) scientific calculator when I got my Master's degree.

I actually taught kids to use a slide rule the first few years I taught, because calculators were so expensive. It was quite a workout running that giant slide rule!

After everyone had a calculator, I used to show off for my students who had never seen such a thing...we would race to do chemistry calculations--they on their calculators, me on my pocket slide rule. I always beat them, and was more likely to have the correct answer! They thought it was magic! (Yes, even when I explained that I was just adding and subtracting with two logarithmic number lines...)
