Kidney Transplant Update

My brother’s health (former smoker-took a toll on his arteries) took him off the list at IU Medical Center but that’s not the end of the donation journey. Northwestern Hospital (Chicago) takes on more “challenging” cases so that’s where we’re headed. I’ve passed all medical tests through IU, including the last one, 24 hour blood pressure monitoring. It should be a matter of transferring my records and one trip to Chicago for a final evaluation for me. Hopefully it will go as easily for my brother and they’ll take his case. He’s already been there for evaluation and is waiting to hear back.

Thank you to all of you for being here during this journey. You’ve helped me through some difficult times not only now with the kidney donation but also in the past with my husband’s cancer (now 9 months in remission).

Northwestern is one of the highest ranking hospitals in Illinois, so you and your brother will be in very good hands. I wish you the best. Let us know when it will be happening so we can pray for you both.

My DH gave a kidney to his brother years ago, 2001 I think. He was back to work in one month and his job comped him all the recuperation time without having to use his PTO. It was one of the best experiences of his life! He has never regretted his choice to donate. Both his brothers sons were discovered to have underlying health issues so were not good candidates. I was super proud of him for his choice to give the gift of life. You are one special person as well. Your brother is a lucky man!

The path to organ donation is not short or easy but so very worth it. My friend had a double lung transplant about five years ago and had a long stretch of years of knocking on doors hoping to be a lung transplant candidate. She found a few heartless rejections but one acceptance was all she needed.

Sending good thoughts across the universe that Chicago holds the answer to your search.
