Finally got rehired

I finally got rehired as a paraprofessional at the school system I worked for when I quit to student teach. I wanted to take a leave of absence so that I could have a job to go back to afterwards until I could get a teaching job, but it is in the para contract that paras may not do so. I tried to get a teaching job for last school year and this school year, but have not been able to do so. I reached a point that I just wish I had what I had before. At least as a para I was paying into my retirement and had decent benefits. I applied this summer, but they interviewed and hired the week my husband and I were away-- job closed Monday, emails to set up interviews went out on Tuesday and interviews were conducted on Thursday. We had spotty cell service when we went away so I didn't realize emails went out. When I got home on Saturday, my emails started popping through and sure enough I missed it. Another position became available and I interviewed today. The vice principal just called me a little while ago to say she would like to offer me the job and HR will be reaching out to me probably tomorrow.

I have mixed emotions. I am excited and disappointed at the same time. I believe I could be hired in another state where it isn't as competitive, but my husband and I decided we just can't relocate right now. He is doing well in this state so he might be afraid to risk a move. Then he got sick and has been out of work so that kind of helped us not to think twice about a move right now. Though I want to get back to work, I like the freedom I have had staying home and don't want it to end either. , I'm a mess!

Thanks for the congrats. When I applied for the para job I was disappointed that being an employee and internal applicant for teacher will not affect the interview process for teacher. I will need to go through the round robin interviews again to be considered like every other applicant. I thought about that again this morning and realized working at this other school will let me get to know two more administrators and other staff that could be on the interview committee for the next round up. That has to count for something. If nothing else I am staying in an educational setting where I will continue to learn. The current vice principal told me she will support my efforts to become a teacher, so at the least maybe she can through a question at me now and then (I might ask) to help me give more solid answers in the next interview. She said she is very hands on, checks in with every team daily, and even covers duties for breaks. I feel good about this opportunity.
