How many copies?

How many times will you give your students a copy of an assignment?

Sometimes we'll have classwork that won't be finished in one sittng. For example, we only have social studies once a week. So if they don't finish they're supposed to put the paper in their unfinished work folder.
I have students that ask for 3 or 4 more copies because they lost it. I don't tend to make many extra copies, because I don't like to waste paper. So if they copies are gone, they're gone.

I've been told by a couple of parents that I'm too hard on them, and should give them a new copy every time they ask. I disagree.

I collect it

I collect all of papers at the end of each lesson. If it's something that might not get finished, I just ask 'done or not done?' as I collect and then I keep the unfinished work in a specific place on my desk. They can't lose it because they don't have it! For the next lesson I either give it out myself or leave it on my desk and tell them that if they still need to finish the previous work, go get it before starting on new work.

Keep one extra copy in a plastic sleeve. If they lose theirs, they copy the questions by hand onto notebook paper, and turn that in.

I will not keep papers for kids. I do NOT want to be the one to lose their work. I feel that they should be able to keep up with their work.
I like the idea of keeping one copy and making them write the questions. I think I'll start doing that.

I used to make 3 or 4 extra copies.

My response to parents was that part of my job was to teach responsibility.

If you want to be generous you could upload the work to your teacher website from the school, if you have one. In this day and age where parent have access to the grade book they will know exactly what assignments to print or snowflake.

I might wait and upload all work pages the week before the grading period ends or just take points off for late work.

Beat me to it! It's amazing just how responsible students become when they have to copy the paper over. Many times a miracle would occur...The "lost" paper would magically appear in a desk or a book bag. !

I post a digital copy to Google Classroom. No extra paper copied. We are allowed to make a limited amount of copies a month. I have to budget my copies.

I teach 8th grade, and this happens often. I upload everything to Google classroom. Parents and students print out copies often. I am not responsible for giving out copy after copy. I have also had students hand copy assignments they lost. Donít beat yourself up about it. Make them take some responsibility. You have enough to worry about.

I don't do many worksheets, but when I do the kids glue them into their notebook for that subject. Nothing ever gets lost.

One of the teachers at my school tells the students that if they lose their copy and she needs to replace it, it is ten points off the grade. She tells them that they are killing more trees when they lose their copy.

I used to let them keep it in their desks. However, I have recently switched to this way because it was taking waaaaaaay too long for them to find anything in them. If it somehow becomes "lost" after that, it is usually IN their desk because they weren't following the directions to leave it ON their desk to be collected!
