Christmas quilt

I’m house sitting for my best friend and meant to bring the pink and yellow quilt fabric with me. I accidentally brought the fabric I picked out for my moms Christmas gift. 8.5 hours later and I’ve got it laid out. I’m going to stack it up neatly and call it a night here. Making 80 squares in one day was quite adventurous for my first real goal, but I did it.

I like it!

I love quilts. My mom, aunts, great aunt, and grandmother all quilt. I never learned how. I could piece one on a machine, but I can’t do any hand piecing.

How do you sew that one together? I like it - very visually stunning.

PS After I zoomed in, I think I figured it out. It looked at first like all the pieces had borders and I couldn't tell how you would ever sew it. But it looks like some are missing a side border so that is how it works... Nice.

All the squares are identical in structure with different fabrics and are turned certain ways to make the “floating frames.” It’s a simple beginner quilt designed by my high school English/creative writing teacher and is called “Floating Frames.”

It’s going to be lovely and truly appreciated.

I don’t quilt, so I have a question: after you lay it out, do you number the pieces, or take a photo, so you remember which piece goes where?

I have no clue on the definitive answer, but I stacked them up so I would sew each row from right to left and then sew them together from the bottom to the top. I messaged the teacher and she said “however you want to do it.”

So is this your first time at quilting? I had seen where you were taking classes but didn’t know if you had dabbled in it before?
This Christmas quilt is amazing and the fact that you did it all in one day is unbelievable. Looks like something people work months on. Great job.

What an accomplishment to be proud of when that is finished!
That's truly a gift of love! She will be so proud of all your hard work in that quilt. I'm sure she will really appreciate that you will have put in so many hours of your time in the creation and assembly of that quilt!

This is my “first one”. It needs a couple more days to put the pieces together (that’s 20% finished) then at my next class I’ll learn how to put batting in and sew the quilting. The next class will be the binding.

I had thought I brought the strips I made last class with me, but I forgot them. I didn’t want to take almost 2 hours out of my day to get the other fabric so I just started another. K was really impressed that I got it laid out and partially sewn together on my own.

The truth is that I like to do costuming so I’m really transferring skills between crafts. Doing cosplay stuff has helped me with basics like using a machine and sewing semi straight lines.
