If you teach first grade and do Reading Workshop can you please tell me where you are at? I am thinking about starting Schema/Connections next week and also work on Retell. Please let me know where you are all at.
Thanks!

I'm working on the Fix-It strategies. I decided to use the Beanie Baby idea. I've introduced Eagle Eye and Lips the Fish so far. I won't get to schema/connections until Nov./Dec. I do however mention those ideas during read aloud times.

Reading Workshop

I just finished the unit on strategies for reading tricky words. I used the Beanie Baby Strategies. This week we are working on reading fluently.

Next week I will begin on the comprehension strategies. I haven't made my plans but usually begin with text to self connections.

I feel like I am so far behind where I wanted to be! But (my excuses to myself) we started a new basal series this year and it is intensive in skills and testing. I am proud that I am still able to incorporate RW!

I am about three weeks into making connections (I *just* started letting the kids "have at it" on the carpet under my watch. Tomorrow I am starting the beanie baby strategy using "Eagle Eye." We have just moved onto print strategies in Kathy Collins, but I made sure to start connections early this year because I never get as far as I want to in Miller's book!

i have just about finished up the beanie baby reading strategies, and then will be moving to fluency this week.

i haven't looked too far ahead, so i'm not sure when i was planning on getting into schema, connections, etc. but i think that i can see that being a good next step.

Decoding Strategies

Hi,
I am just finishing a unit on decoding tricky words, and have started to introduce character trait as well. I also added a week on repetitive text this year and found it to be very helpful.
I am moving into making connections, but it will be so much easier this year. Our kindergarten teachers and the librarian started making connections with them last year, so many already have the idea. It is amazing how much they remember! So , I plan on doing that next week and move into discussing beginning, middle and end to conincide with my small moments unit.
I just love doing Readers Workshop and want to thank all of you for the insight you provide. The people on this sight oftne help me clarify ideas and offer SO much support. Thanks all!

I'm just looking at RW and wondering if it is right for me. I teach 1st grade and just started with Daily 5 this year. This looks good - where do I start?

Definitely read Growing Readers by Kathy Collins and Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller.

I am following Growing Readers and we are up to print strategies...we're filling up our Reader's Toolbox and we added our 3rd tool today! I haven't done any Miller yet...
