Classroom Theme

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I have had the same theme for several years now. It is travel and I love it! I can't believe some teachers change their theme every year. It takes so much time, money and effort.

However, I am now ready for a change. My cabinets are royal blue and so are my student chairs. So I have to choose something that goes with all that blue. I am leaning toward a nautical theme. It will work well with my classroom's colors, plus we have a school wide ocean unit in the spring so that makes it a logical choice.

I plan on adding lots of red to make the blue POP more. I will cover my BBs in red paper and then I think I will trim with the red and white nylon rope I found at Home Depot. It is a half to three fourths inch thick. I may have to use two rows.

I will make a black paper ship's wheel to laminate. Then I will hang it under my classroom clock to create a nautical clock.

I already have a blue anchor chart sign from Vista Print that has a picture of an anchor. It fits right in and I post our anchor charts below the sign throughout the year.

I want to create a mural type wall somehow with the ocean, sky and a lighthouse. Still pondering this idea. Any ideas?

I have a captain's hat to wear when I am conferencing. When I am wearing the hat, students will know not to interrupt me unless it is a 911 emergency.

I want to buy a ship's bell to mount on my wall and also an anchor doorstop.

I plan on decorating my clipboards with nautical scrape paper and then decoupage them.

What else can I do to make my classroom the perfect nautical classroom? I need lots of ideas!

If you do a welcome back bulletin board at the beginning of the year with the kids pictures, you could cut them as circles and put a border around them like they were looking out a porthole. "We're sailing into a great year..."

Your classroom jobs could have names like:
Captain - line leader
First mate - messenger
Second officer - paper passer
Boatswain (bo-sun) - door holder
Steward - librarian

If you have a clip chart, the levels could be named "ship shape", "ready to sail", "in the brig", etc.

You could incorporate a net on the wall/ a bulletin board in some way...
How about an ANCHOR, SAIL, or OCEAN organizational binder for the kiddos?
What about sea shells and/or starfish?
You could also add a life preserver ring and/or oars.

Sounds like you will have TONS of fun decorating with this theme!

When they have the summer sales you can get the following:

Pails and Shovels use to house materials and also to hold your centers in if you use them.

You can get some beach chairs for your reading corner.

The dollar tree usually has a bag of seashells that you can use as border for your bulletin boards.

Add some beach, sea, ocean related books to your classroom library.

I was just at our teacher store and they had a nautical theme bulletin board that was so cute. They used a Styrofoam life preserver wrapped in blue with the heading, SOS....Need Help? And they had listed ways to decode a word, or pick a just right book, or word wall with words to use instead of said, happy, nice etc. It was very cute.

My classroom has been cleaned so I am going in soon to set up and decorate. I love the BB idea.
