Clip to ScrapBook #1

Today at a faculty meeting, we were told that A) about every week, some parent posts a complaint to social media, therefore B) we must focus on the positive to the tune of 100 to 1, and C) next year, we may have a PR committee instead of an Emergency committee.

What I wanted to say was, "Fight fire with fire. Parents like to complain on social media, since that's the medium of the decade, so we should follow suit." Of course, nothing that would violate FERPA, but how about: Today, 25 kids showed up late to school. There were 30 unexcused absences. Classroom instruction was interrupted 50 times to call students to the office for transportation notes. 2 classrooms dealt with direct phone calls from parents during instructional time. 4 students were referred to the office for violent behavior. Etc, etc, etc.

I know it's not possible, but oh how I wish it was. I'm tired of teachers and the education field as a whole being held to a ridiculous standard and then being told that we have to keep our "customers" happy. Nope, sorry, my students and their parents are not my "customers". If I wanted to be a teacher with "customers", I would teach in the private sector.

I actually saw a school featured in one of my FB groups not too long ago that posts the school attendance outside the school on one of those sidewalk sandwich board dealies. Like, "Yesterday we had 24 absences and 32 tardies". Something about seeing it like that might wake up a few parents.
