Where do you get poems to read in the upper elementary grades (5th)? I need to incorporate more poetry in my teaching.

thanks!

Please include Shel Silverstein's poems in your class. They are often funny, and have layers of meaning, so kids can practice higher order thinking skills. My students have enjoyed them.

I use lessons and poems from readworks.org and learnzillion.com.

Readworks.org uses poetry from: Leaf by Leaf: Autumn Poems selected by Barbara Rogasky and A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein - and one other book.
You would need to purchase the books to teach the lessons.

Learnzillion.com supplies the lessons and poems.

Order this book:
Awakening the Heart: Exploring Poetry in Elementary and Middle School
Georgia Heard will teach you exactly how to teach poetry to your students. I love this book--it is the basis of my very successful poetry unit.
I teach 5th also.

And go to this site http://www.loc.gov/poetry/180/ and sign up for the free email--they'll send you a poem a day during the school year and, though some aren't appropriate for 5th, many are excellent for analysis and discussion.

The Poetry Friday Anthology is what I use for my 6th graders. Here is the link for K-5.
