Dh and I are making a radical change in our relationship

After 38 years of marriage, we have decided to make a major change. In an unprecedented move, we are swapping which side of the bed we sleep on.

In our new bedroom, the layout requires that my dresser be on his side....so I am constantly having to sidle past him to get at my clothing when we are both getting dressed. Also, he is up at night to use the bathroom more often than I am...and he sleeps on the side of the bed that is farthest from the bathroom. Plus, he controls the window from his side...and we all know that can’t continue.

Not sure if I can actually fall asleep on the wrong side of the bed, but the circumstances are all in favor of making the switch.

Think you could switch sides?

We did it! We were just talking about this the other day. It's been in the last 3-4 years. Not sure why we switched...but we did. Works for both of us.

This would lead to another big change...divorce in my house. Even at a hotel DH can't sleep on the "wrong side"

It kind of reminds me of "If you give a mouse a cookie..."

If you change the layout of the room, the dresser must move.
If the dresser moves, the bed must move.
If the bed moves, the sides must move...
If you move sides you will remember....

My SO and I have been living together for about a couple of yrs now. Everything you said lisa53 that WAS on each of your sides BEFORE your switch is how it is in our bedroom, but we don't mind it at all personally (and yes, he gets up to go to the bathroom more than me too). I lived alone here first for a few yrs and always kind of slept more on the side I'm on now anyway. I'm sure we could switch and not feel strange.

It will be interesting to see if one of you uses the bathroom at night then returns, half-asleep, to climb into bed on top of the person sleeping on “the wrong side.”

DH always jokingly accused me of taking my half in the middle.

Now that I’m alone, I still sleep on “my side,” even though it’s no longer the side closest to the bathroom.

My husband insists that we used to sleep on different sides of the bed when we first got married, but we didn't. The room arrangement in our first apartment was just very different than any arrangement we've had since. Recently, he was working out of town and I went to go visit him. He was already used to sleeping on "my side" of the bed so I switched to the other side.

I realized why I prefer the other side. I'm a side/stomach sleeper, but prefer sleeping on my right side. I like to sleep with my head facing out of the bed, not into the bed. So, I would rather not switch sides, but I can do it if I absolutely have to.

I read an article about 20 years ago that suggested that switching sides in teh bed was good for I-can't-remember-the-reason so we tried it. I lasted about 20 minutes before I woke Man up and made him move over.

Haha. You pulled a Hifi. He always titles posts that make it sound like he is talking about something serious, then we find that they are about the dog or something.

My husband and I have stayed on certain sides since we moved to our current place 12 years ago. Oddly when we go to a hotel, we do not always sleep on our regular side. It depends on the layout of the hotel room.

Ha - a major change for sure! We swapped once when we moved and the layout worked better for me. I kind of want to swap now, because he's closer to the 2nd window, but I don't know if I can do it at this point...

Beds

I don't care one way or the other which side of the bed I sleep on. DH doesn't either. That being said we always sleep on the same sides of the bed. If we switched it wouldn't be a big deal.

Since DH started using his C-Pap, his side is the one closest to the outlet. I can fall asleep anywhere, so it doesn't matter to me!

Nope, I don't sleep in the same bed with my SO every night because we don't live together, but have been involved for 16 years. One time at a hotel we somehow ended up on the "wrong" sides of the bed. I made him switch we me after like 10 minutes because I couldn't handle it.

I don't think it can be done---the switch, I mean.

We've been married 37 years.

A few years back I had DH sleep in an extra bedroom while I painted our room. The bed was pushed up against the wall with "his side" by the wall. He tried to get up in the middle of the night, fell, and got caught between the bed and the wall. (not hurt)

My step kids are visiting and they keep sitting in MY chair and at MY place at the table. If dh tried to switch sides of the bed it would completely push me over the edge.

After my DH died I still slept on my side of the bed for probably a year or so and I'm finally sleeping in the middle of the bed or on his side wherever I want. I don't know what made me realize that I can sleep wherever I want but once I did there was no going back.

We move a fair amount, and we just sleep on whichever side. So what that means is that we usually switch with each move. At hotels, i pick the side i like best. It varies. So switching would not be an issue for us.

You are cracking me up ! Not sure I could do that. Because of the positions DH and I sleep in it would be uncomfortable for me.

Nope! I couldn't do it!! 26 years on the same side for me. I could happily stretch across the bed diagonally if DH could just sleep in a different bed! He can sleep anywhere!

Lol! This would drive my DH crazy! But it wouldn’t bother me at all. Every time we go to a hotel I ask which side of the bed he wants. I can never remember which side is mine in a different room.

I always get the side closest to the bathroom - and he gets the window. We've moved a few times, and somehow that means we switch each time. Hotels, etc, too. It takes a night of being slightly off, but after that we're both fine - and I think that's more of being in a new place. I hadn't realized that so many people were "stuck" on their side!
