DH had the movers out today to get estimate on moving our furniture. They said it will be about $4000! What?!? We are only moving a couple hours away. We do have some big, heavy furniture, but that's nuts! They said the basketball goal would cost $200. I can buy a new one for that price! Guess it's time to start looking at other companies...

I've only used movers once, but the company paid for it. It was outrageous, but when you pay the cost of the fuel/truck expenses/driver/movers, it does add up! We also moved a couple of states away. I'd say keep looking, or maybe rent a UHaul and move some of the smaller stuff and leave the furniture for movers.

I've always done the U-Haul thing, too, because moving expenses are so outrageous. I hope you find one priced more reasonably for your budget.

We decided to check out PODS for DD's move from NC to MI. She is only moving a small apartment worth of furniture and personal items, but I thought their price was decent. Of course you do all the loading.

When I moved 900 miles, I had the movers just come and pack the truck for me. I had rented a uhaul. They packed it for me for fairly cheap. I drove it to my new location, and has family help unload it. You could away see if you can have packers so either end of the trip for you!

Moving expenses

They quoted us $3,000 to go from NC to OH. We don't have a lot of family or friends able to help us move and with an 18 month old the two of us couldn't do it ourselves.

I can't imagine letting some stranger pack my stuff. DH is very particular about how the stuff is packed in the truck too. He should have been a mover.

Did you get more than one quote?

When I was looking, there did not seem to be any consistency. All the quotes were vastly different. We did not have any big, heavy furniture and the estimates ranged from $750-$2500. One place wanted to charge $1000 more for mileage than other companies. Thankfully, one of the cheapest companies had the best reviews.

I'd suggest shopping around.

Are they packing the boxes for you? That's all I can think of....

I've moved a dozen or so times, and I had always gone the Uhaul route, but when looking into it (three moves ago?) I found that movers are actually cheeper - and the last few moves have priced it out again and found the same.

I never have them pack for me, have everything as close to the door as possible, organized, boxed, labeled, etc and it's gone smoothly. They do charge arms and legs for packing/unpacking though. (I can't imagine wanting someone to do that for me!!!)

Good luck!

Last time I moved was 7 years ago. I moved from a house into an apartment. It is a 20 min ride from old home to new. I did move to a third floor walk up but it cost me $2000. For me, it was worth every penny. They placed everything. All I had to do was unpack the boxes. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

I have also done the U-Haul. The routine.... invite friends and family and once the job is done, I provide the beer and brats. Isn't that the way EVERYONE does it?

Seems about right to me....

Our last move was 2 hours away. It was a corporate move that they paid for, but when my DH switched jobs we ended up paying it back as he hadn't been at the company long enough. $4000 seems like a steal to me....ours was A LOT more. They did all our packing, loading, unloading and unpacking. Also hauled away all the packing materials they unpacked and came back one time to haul away more.

To be honest, I sometimes think the stress of moving is enough and having someone else do all the heavy lifting is just easier. I'm kind of lazy in that way a bit and my DH can't handle stress well.

Just my 2 cents though! Oh and we moved with a 1 yr old, 3 yr old and 5 yr old....2 weeks before school started! Oy!

Movers

Check them out carefully - if they are reputable and you can check references, it may be worth the money. The movers we hired on out last move seemed to be ok, but the ruined, dented, damaged, and were in general careless with so many of our things - boxes of plates (which I carefully packed) were broken, multiple table tops were gouged and out refrigerator was scratched and dented. Seriously, it may be well worth the money.
