For those of you who have a listening station/area, do you allow students to choose their own story to listen to? Has it ever been a problem with them scratching the CDs. I have created a Donors Choose for the TAG pens, so students can choose their story, but I get so nervous about letting them just stick a CD in the player.

model how to put in a CD. I am more concerned with my old tapes...I only put out4-5 books per week and these are the ones they can choose from. I have had problems over the choice of a which book to listen to. So I have solved that by placing a timer when they can't choose when the timer goes off and no choice has been made I make the choice. Funny only take one time for this to happen.

I put out a few books for the kids to choose from. In the beginning of the year it may only be 2 or 3. As they get more confident using the equipment I allow them more choices. Cds seem to hold up much better than cassette tapes! I teach the kids how to use the cd adn tape player. They are pretty good at doing it themselves.

Haven't had a problem. We use it with the small guided readers that come with our Reading program-they listen in small groups during Centers, and do a really good job. Like the PP, I do a demo. It's a huge help for my lowest level readers who always do better when they get to hear it first for fluency...so far, so good!

You would always just burn the CDs into iTunes and then have your listening center at the computer. You could create a playlist for them to choose from.

I burn a copy of my CDs and the kids listen to the burned copy so I still have my original in case they mess it up.

I was wanting to have a listening center in the same area as my LA/Writing center. However, that might be a problem if I don't have any tapes or cds with stories on them. I need some suggestions on what to do and how to go about getting some stories on tapes with books that are at a reasonable price. Our school's reading series is very old...probably 20 years or so. Since it is so outdated, we plan based on the skills that need to be taught and then find a story that will be good to teach that skill. We do not always read a weekly story and I wished we had the material in order to do so because I like it..but, oh well!

So do yall have cds that come with your series? If not, where can I get some tapes or cds and books to go along with them? HELP! I have so many students that would benefit from listening to a story before they read it and I really hope to do a listening center.

I get a lot of mine from scholastic and from the library.

I burn copies of my cd's from Scholastic and put those out. I know a lot of kids would do well not harming them, but I don't want to chance it with 6-7 year olds. Just a thought...

That is a good idea too. I may ask my SIL to do that while she is home from college. She told me yesterday she was bored

Burning cd's would definitely keep her busy!

I have also done like JMeacham does with her MP3's (except on cd's) and copied several books onto one and then made a menu and then all they have to do is choose which number on the menu and go to that track on the cd. My first graders did really well with this. I put 3-4 stories on each one and it kept them occupied for one 20-minute round of Daily 5.
