Hi everyone,
Last year was my first year directing our school's play. We did the Wizard of Oz and the students did a wonderful job and parents were very happy. We had only one performance(small private school) but it was SOLD OUT! Here's my dilemma: Our play is open to 4-8 graders which gives us about 50 students. The problem is they are mostly girls. Any suggestions for plays that would accomodate mostly girls and probably about 25-30 students? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what companies have you used for purchasing scripts?

Try going to broadwayjr (dot) com.

There is a list of musicals they provide mostly for kid productions. As for the mostly girls, look up Dear Edwina Jr or Annie Jr.

I did a production of 'Into the Woods' years ago with around 40 kids...and it was great! (we used Broadway Jr.)

How about Les Miserables? just kidding, but its a great play if you havent been!

I would suggest a derivative of Cinderalla. You could do a modern take on it, and have even more girls as characters. The only real male leads you would need are the Prince and maybe a "mouse" or two.

As long as you're using Broadway Jr. or something written specifically for unchanged voices so it's in the treble range, don't be afraid to cast girls in male parts.

I did Pirates! the Musical (John Jacobson and Roger Emerson) last year, and it was a big hit. I don't know if it would be as popular with your 6th through 8th graders, but my 4th and 5th graders loved it. I had two casts, and each had at least one girl playing a male role. Most girls have no problem with it, but you can also modify the roles slightly (we changed the King of the High Cs to the Queen of the High Cs) to accommodate your girls.
