Our school is reading the book Writing About Reading by Janet Angelillo and working to implement some of the strategies discussed. We have just started reading the book, but from what I have read so far, it talks about reading books to students and modeling how to think about the book critically and take notes to use later when writing about it. It is written for 3rd-5th grade teachers and I teach 1st grade so I'm trying to figure out how to modify it for my students. I am looking for ideas for books to use as read alouds that would be appropriate for first graders yet still have thought-provoking ideas to discuss. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Little Beaver and the Echo. Lovely book about loneliness and making friends.
The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. A mouse uses his wits to avoid being eaten.
The Kindest Giant in Town also by Julia. The rewards of kindness and doing good deeds. Helping others less fortunate etc.
