I am going to be teaching fifth grade, reading and language arts next year at a magnet school. It's a great school and a wonderful opportunity, but I have been teaching math for the last 4 years! I'll be new to the school so I am not sure exactly what materials they will have, but I do know they use the basal for a lot of instruction.

I would like to implement novels and read alouds, but can you think of anything else that's really important to create an enviornment that breeds readers?? I don't know how to get them to be passionate about reading when we are reading three-five page stories.

Any outstanding books I should buy for PD over the summer? I already bought the Book Whisperer and The Read Aloud Handbook. Thank you for your suggestions!

It sounds to me like you would do well with the readers workshop model. There are many books about it and you need to follow your core standards etc. I wasn't sold on it all year because of the way it was presented to us last summer. Then, I observed a teacher doing it in her room late this year and bam! I was a believer. She made it fit her style and classes. Hope this helps.

Does your school/district implement the common core? If so, that will give you plenty to do that will encourage your students to be strong competent readers.

Pinterest has lots a visuals and suggestions that can give you ideas to create an environment for all readers.

I am in Texas so we don't use common core. I am going to be getting the TEs and scope and sequence in the next couple weeks. I can't wait to see it!
