HI everyone,

I am hoping you can help me out once again, a parent has committed suicide in our small school. Although I AM just on my practicum the school has asked me to talk the students in the classrooms of the children whose mom committed suicide Do you know of any websites or articles that deal with the tragedy in order to help me, help the children in the school understand and support the grieving children of the mom who commited suicide.

I have never dealt with this before. That's a lot to put on a practicum student! Do you have a mentor who can offer you some resources? I looked at my handy resource list and couldn't find stuff. I then just did a google search and came up with some possibilities to get you started:

Honestly, these are all just from the first page of a google search, so I'm not sure how helpful or if you've already found these (I assume you did some searching on your own, so perhaps this is all old news). Good luck! Let us know how it goes. I hope you have someone more experienced to support you. This is a great experience for you to have, but very overwhelming.

Honestly, I don't think they should have asked you. You are not a certificated teacher, and, even if you were, it would not be something you were trained to do. The school counselor should be the one to address this issue. If your school doesn't have one, there is likely one at another site in your district.

I am a certified teacher as well, for over 20 years. We have very few resources in our district/school and the ones you sent me are fabulous. I feel okay with them asking me, and when I talked to the kids they just wanted to talk and how they should behave around the kids whose mom committed suicide. there was a lot of misinformation and gossip around this as well and I am glad the school got it straight.
