Hello! I teach science and my students have completed their state test this week. Basically, they have about 4 more standardized tests coming up in the next couple of weeks. We have covered all the units. What are some ideas that will keep students engaged after state testing? I can't do anything using computers because they are being used for testing. What grade level? I'm assuming by your "handle" that you are teaching biology.

I like to do a review of the scientific method by having kids do group projects where they design and perform an experiment. It is crazy to manage, but you can set some parameters that will make things easier for you. For example, choose one organism (bean plants, fruit flies, mixed algae cultures, whatever). Have them do a full on experiment: ask a question, do library background research, formulate a hypothesis, plan an experiment with proper controls, perform the experiment, document their data, write a complete conclusion. If you have little notebooks like blue books, they can keep their work in those...each group has one notebook, and students initial their work to document that everyone did some work. Projects can be presented to the class with a storyboard to show their work and/or they can write a formal lab report. You can make your requirements as simple or as complex as you like, depending on available time.
