Ahh, emergency question about Christmas gifts!

So, I'm a terrible gift receiver. I teach Kinder so I usually get a lot of Christmas gifts. When we're in school, I usually will collect the gifts from students as they come in (trying not to make a big deal because some kids don't get gifts), say thank you, then privately during the day I'll call the students over and open the gift in front of them. I then will write a quick thank you note and give it to the student for them and their parents.

We're distance learning right now but we're passing out packets tomorrow morning to parents. I've already had a few parents mention gifts. I have no idea the protocol for this type of present giving. Will parents expect me to open it in front of them, or can I just say thank you and that I can't wait to open it later, then send a thank you note later?

I think parents won't expect you to open it right away, especially during packet passing out. If they do ask you to, you could do it for that family, but otherwise I would go with a verbal thank you and sending a note later.

PP gave great suggestions.

And since you are remote, you might even say that you can’t wait to open it when you get back to school.

I pretty much always let things that come from sources I can’t control either sit for a few days or wipe it down with Lysol/Clorox wipe.

I never open gifts in front of the kids, and send a thank you later. I think your plan is perfect!
