I am wondering how to hold a seminar situation online. We are 100% virtual and use google meets for our live lessons.
I teach 3rd grade and need something to keep them engaged and learning on a deeper level.
Please help!
Thank you in advance.

I'm responding because you deserve some kind of an answer. But I'm pretty stumped. To some extent, it depends on the SES of your students. Poverty kids have not a lot in the way of materials beyond the school issued computer. Others may have access to parental help and guidance in how to seminar as well as research support.

It's not that some parents don't want to help, it's that for the most part they have little experience in such classes.

What is the subject of your seminar? Their seminar? Are you assigning research topics to prepare individually and present to the class? Do the children choose their own? Are they turning in a written research paper?

Is it all research variously (likely NOT on Wikipedia) on the same limited topic and discuss findings informally (without a report, per se)?

Hmm. Mostly questions here.
What is your goal for the class?
What topic(s) will you use to reach that goal?
What kinds of supports will you offer to support the students?
A list of possible topics
A list of options for research
A list of options for presentation
A backward planning calendar for each topic to guide them to be ready
at the due date (Choose a topic by ________, gather materials for
research by _________, read and narrow your ideas by ______,
rough draft of your report by _______, revise your draft by ____,
edit your draft by ______, rewrite your report by ______, present

Not sure if any of this was helpful at all. I'd think a seminar approach for third graders will take a lot of guidance and arm wrestling unless your students are highly motivated.

Thank you so much.
I was planning a seminar using text about Ruby Bridges but it may be more than they can handle in a remote environment.

Maybe Padlet. I use a lot to ask questions and they respond and can even respond to each other.

Flipgrid. With this, kids make a video and students respond with text or their own video.

My LMS is Canvas which also has a discussion feature. There when I pose a question, I set so that they have to answer before responding to one of their classmates.

Here is a page from Stacy Yung's site: https://www.stacyyung.com/templates

Partway down the page is her template for Socratic Seminars Online. She also links a blog post about how she does it. I don't know if it would be too much for your students, but it's worth a look.
