inappropriate teacher

As a student teacher I am in a 4th grade classroom at a local elementary school. The class is great and the school is nice, but I am having trouble with the teacher I am working with. The teacher I'm working with is very inappropriate at times in the things that he says and does when the children are not in the classroom. He tends to use foul language and tell me too much about his personal life. Any advice on how to confront him about his lack of professionalism would be great!

Supervisors can help.

My first move would be to talk to your supervisor about the situation. Talking to him or her can help you understand the situation better. There might also be a specific way of dealing with these type of situations so being informed would be your best bet. If your supervisor cannot help you with the situation, I would confront the teacher in a casual conversation expressing your concerns. Good luck! Hope everything turns out well

I agree that you should talk to your supervisor first. They should be able to give you advice that you need in order to approach the teacher. It can and probably will be an awkward situation. If you do not want to do that first, than I think you should simply say that your not used to that type of language and it makes you uncomfortable. He will either take it in a positive way or a negative way. I hope that everything works out.

Same situation

I am in the same situation that you are. I am working with 2 teachers and I find that I am not having a good experience with either one of them. One teacher talks too much about her personal life, stuff I do not need to know, and texts all the time during class and the other one makes comments to me about how I should pick a different profession. Like you said, the class and the school are fine, but I am having trouble with my teachers too. I had a much better experience last year than I am now. Things went well last week for me, but if the teachers don't become more professional and more welcoming towards me, I will most likely speak with my college supervisor and see where that goes.

Teacher Help

The best thing to do would be to talk to your college supervisor first. They might be able to help you decide on what your course of action should be in regards to what you can do to improve this situation for you. In addition, you might want to ask your supervior if there are activities that you could do outside the classroom during planning time, so that you do not have to confront him. Even though it might be difficult now, dealing with this situation will prepare you for when you are in the classroom and have to work with coworkers who do not share your same professional characteristics. Hang in there!

Thanks for all of the advice! I guess I will start by discussing the issue with my supervisor like so many of you have suggested. Hopefully she will be able to help me resolve the issues without too much awkwardness or confrontation! I will keep you posted on how it goes! Keep your fingers crossed for me lol

Talk to a supervisor

It may be hard to confront and talk to your teacher one-on-one. I would talk to a supervisor and make them aware of this issue. you need to be comfortable in the classroom. A possibility is that they may switch you to a different teacher. If it only happened once or twice it would be a different story. However this issue needs to be adressed and corrected immediately! You should not be put in that position. Good luck!

learning from the best and the worst

Some student teachers are lucky and get placed with amazing teachers. Some of us aren't so lucky, but what we may take away from our experience is knowing what not to do, what not to say, and how not to behave. My student teaching taught me what kind of teacher I never want to be! I witnessed so much screaming and hollering during my student teaching...I couldn't believe it! And this wasn't just using a loud voice, this was using an ugly tone and harsh words. I didn't have a wonderful experience, but I certainly learned a lot.
