Positive thoughts for my mom

I was awaken at 3:30 this morning by a call from the assisted living place where my elderly mom ( with dementia) resides. She had fallen and they called the rescue squad. I live less than a mile away so I tossed on some clothes and went there. She apparently fell either going or coming from the bathroom, we think. Having dementia, she can't remember how she fell. She must have hit her face on the seat of her walker and has a skinned up and swollen nose and two very black eyes. She is on a blood thinner, so it looks really horrible. We were in the ER until 11:00. Turns out she broke her arm also. Since she needs a walker she will be wheel chair bound for awhile which is not good because she loses strength quickly if she doesn't walk. Her health is fragile as it is, so we are concerned. Ughhhh......I guess this is payback for all the nights she worried about me!

Oh, I am so sorry about your mom. It is so hard watching our parents' health decline.

Hoping she recovers as quick as can be expected.

I am so sorry to hear about your mom. Can she get physical therapy that would come and help her walk each day to keep that strength up and improve her circulation. They also make bed alarms that go off if a person tries to get up at night. Alerts the staff that she'd need assistance. Oh it is so hard to see them hurt. My mom had paper thin skin that would tear open with the slightest bump. Some times they would use surgical glue but on larger ones it would take many trips to the wound clinic and special treatments before it would heal.

Perhaps the doctor can order physical therapy to help prevent your mom from becoming weak while she must use a wheelchair.

She will be receiving both PT and OT so that should help her as she recovers. They have also put into place several fall interventions such as a chair/ bed alarm (that should arrive by Thursday), some bumper type things they will place under her sheets, and a fall mat by her bed. The staff is going to be vigilant in checking on her more frequently, too. Those interventions help the worries somewhat. The tricky thing is that with her dementia she doesn't remember to pull the cord for assistance. The hope is with the alarm and bumpers the staff will be able to get to her before she gets too far up. Right now I think with her hurting arm she won't even be able to try. She is sleeping in her lift chair for a few days to help getting up and down easier. Thanks for the positive thoughts!

My thoughts are going out for your family and your mom.

Terrible when the tables are turned on us, isn't it? I am glad you live close enough to your parents to be able to respond so quickly.

My Mom is also in assisted living and has had several falls of late as well. It is scary. I hope she heals well.

You are right about her losing her strength in the wheel chair. If I were you I would get her up daily for assisted walking. She needs a family member or therapist to work with her daily so she does not lose all her strength. If a family member does this with your mom have an expert show them how. Since she was walking with a walker you will probably have to do something like a bear walk exercise. It looks almost like you are dancing. I hope that makes sense. I wish you and your mom the best.

Been there..

My father would crawl out of bed all the time in the hospital.

The bed alarm actually made it worse for him. He was with it enough to know the bed was alarmed, and furious about that fact. Sometimes he would get out of bed looking to destroy/deactivate the alarm.

This happened after his first brain surgery.

Bed alarms and bumper pads really work to slow down people. My father was in good physical health. He had decent enough strength to raise hell.

Quick healing vibes to your mom.. <3

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I'm glad she will be getting PT and OT. If you are able to be there when they are working with her you can ask them if there is anything you can safely do to help her recover..

I know how hard it is to watch your parents decline physically and mentally. The role reversal is tough, too. I spent much time worrying about and caring for my parents. They are both gone now, so in a way it is easier. But I miss them dearly. Hang in there.

What a worry! I'm glad they're putting things in place to help guard against this in the future. Thinking of you and your mom.
