I used to like Hifi

I used to like Hifi. I did. I respected and laughed and admired. But this whole exclamation mark argument has me rethinking my allegiance.

Hifi said he hates exclamation marks and many posters jumped right on the bandwagon, praising their own deletion of the punctuation mark.

Iíve thought about the issue a lot. Even my dear friend, Vicki Spandel, cautions young writers about the overuse of the exclamation mark. Iím not a huge exclamation mark user, but thereís no way Iím giving them up. I love joy in my life. Joy!

My favorite punctuation mark is also in danger of extinction: my beloved semicolon. My #2 favorite author, John Irving, loves the semicolon; I love the semicolon.

Hifi, youíre a force to be reckoned withówhat influence you have. Please donít attack my dear semicolon.

P.S. Iím also a huge fan of the properly used comma.

when people advocate for using any type of punctuation less.

Think of all those PBS punctuation mark characters slowly dying like Tinker-Bell because you just stop believing in using them.

If you want exclamation marks to live on...
Clap, clap. Clap, clap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always wondered why the interrobang never came into common use. Unfortunately, neither PT nor my keyboard allow me to type one into my post. Why not?! (which I could do more efficiently with an interrobang)...

I had to look up interrobang, but I like it! And then of course I had to figure out how to add one to my keyboard. Isnít it great

And I sorry HiFi, but I have to side with those who love the exclamation point!!!

I especially love punctuation marks that show emotions.

I'm also very comfortable with myself and am not easily influenced other to change my thinking just because I read about something on this board or any other boards.

So..... I'll continue to feel completely comfortable with using punctuation marks that show my emotions of the moment.

Long live the exclamation mark!!!

big fan of the dash, here.

i was going to post that and then decided against it--answered another post and used about 10 of them, so decided to come back and add it. see ^ there one is! (i do also like my exclamation points, but i usually don't use more than one--and try to watch that i haven't used a bunch of sentences in a row with exclamation points.)

I also share your fondness of semicolons. I always tell my husband that his properly placed semicolon in one of our first emails is one of the reasons I fell in love with him!

happygirl, I love your story so much! Iíve always been a big John Irving fan. Imagine my pleasure upon learning heís a semicolon fan, too. And Iíll bet you like this: I recently read a dumb mystery in which they figured out it wasnít really the missing person writing the text messages because heíd never use a semicolon. That made my day.

people, people, I thought we all learned that lesson when punctuation took a vacation*! Havoc reigned! Confusion ensued! Kingdoms crumbled! Shelby exaggerates!

* Punctuation Takes a Vacation

Having said that the exclamation mark should be withheld from all girls 10-17 and Marie Kondo.

How else in this day and age of constant text communication can we show emotion, especially on PT where we cannot ďlikeĒ?

Long live the exclamation point and the semicolons!!! Do not take away any of our punctuation points!

Sorry Amiga, I tend to agree more with Hifi. I like to use exclamation marks but get annoyed seeing them grossly overused. Shelby and Tia, you are absolutely right! Unfortunately, I see the 'crime' of overusing exclamation marks committed more often by women - even ELA teachers! There, I used two! Make that three! No, four! Oh-oh, I'm in trouble.
