Need help with gifted children

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I have about 4 students that are constantly competing with each other to be the first for everything. I just finished conferences and expressed my concern and optimism for this issue, however I do know that I need to find activities that can challenge these students. I need some suggestions on what to do for and with them during class time and after class time that will challenge their minds. Please help. I am new to third grade this year and would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thank you

I also have a small group that I am trying to challenge. I would love ideas on what to do with these kids. I have been having them do versatiles weekly now, but was wanting some other ideas. Thanks so much!

Dealing with the GIFTed Children

I have thirteen GATE children in my class of 25 students.

1. I pretest the math chapter. If they receive 85% or more, I allow them to do the next grade level skill. They do the odd problems for example on a 3rd grade math assignment (I base that assignment on their grade) and the other half of their assignment is a related 4th grade skill.

2. I pretest their spelling list. If they get 100% or miss one, they do a more challenging list - which are vocabulary words from the story.

3. They do literature circles from chapter books at their reading level.

4. I use the Depth and Complexity Icons with each story.

5. They also do a reasearch project in class. I show them how to take notes from nonfiction material, write the report, table of content, and bibliogaphy.

6. I purchased a building kit, that they may contrast in their free time.
