A month long vacation and cruise!

I will soon be off on a 23-night transpacific cruise to Sydney, Australia. We stop in Oahu and Maui for a few days and then sail past the equator and international date line before arriving at five Pacific Islands. We then end in Sydney and will go to the Blue Mountains, Featherdale Wildlife Park and general city sightseeing. Then we head off to Auckland, New Zealand for a few days where we will be traveling for the day to Hobbiton which is where the Hobbit was filmed. About 31 days in all.

I will try to post if I am able to get a good connection. We are "disconnecting" for most of our cruise- too expensive to stay on the computer or cell phone! We have been planning this for almost two years! BTW- you know how I love to talk about my travel bargains. This cruise is $1466 pp for 23 nights. Repositioning cruises are a real value!

Sounds wonderful! Being out of touch at this crazy, sad time in our country would be a pleasure.

Have a wonderful time! Long cruises are wonderful - we did a 21 day right after we retired. I could have stayed on board for another 21 days. I want to see pictures of Hobbiton when you get back!

How many people can give this answer to "Where are you going on your vacation?" "Oh, I'm going to Middle Earth." (Hobbiton)

Repositioning means that the ship is going to a different region. Transatlantics move back and forth in the spring and fall between the Caribbean and Europe. Transpacifics go from Alaska to Asia or Australia. They are typically one of the least expensive ways to cruise and are 14-20+ days. Mine is the Explorer of the Seas with Royal Caribbean. That's about $64 a day for food, a cabin, entertainment, etc.

One great benefit for teachers is that repositioning cruises are DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR so there are very few kids onboard!

I'll do a review with photos and put it on my website when I return.

Juliet- my last transatlantic was $479 for 14 fabulous nights. We visited several ports in Portugal and Spain and ended in Barcelona. We have been on two others ending in Copenhagen and the other in Rome.

They are right there on the internet. The secret is to do your research. Let's say you want to take a transatlantic to Rome in 2018. Start by keeping a record of the cost of the sailing from the time it is first posted. This is the time you get the best deals and no worry: you can cancel and get all your $ back up to 90 days before sailing. There are three great websites:

www.vacationstogo.com- spend some time and see what is available.

www.cruisefish.net- this site keeps a historical record of the cost of each sailing. I've learned to find the sweet spot.

www.cruisecritic.com- the largest info site about cruising. Every itty bitty detail about cruising and free advice from very experienced cruisers. I've written featured reviews for them. Finding others on my roll call for our sailing has resulted in some great friends to travel with on excursions, dancing, dining, partying, etc.

One of the experiences I am most looking forward to is going to church in Fiji. I heard from my travel peeps that the experience of worshiping with indigenous people is pretty amazing, so I found a church in Suva and FB'd them about the time. They wrote back "Bula, Donna!" all interested in our visit and asked some questions. The service will be in Fijian even though the country's primary language is English. They are going to provide the sermon notes in English for us.

This is an AMAZING country considering that Fiji used to be called "The Cannibal Islands" for good reason. They ate their last missionary in 1864- really! Consider how far they have come with pretty much the whole country closing down on Sundays. Seems like our country is in a reverse course!

My DH and I joke about the possibility that we will be asked to step into their baptismal font!
