Does anyone have any ideas for a math project for 4th grade? I use to do a project around multiplication finding things that came in groups. I wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas for elementary projects to do at home. Thanks for any ideas.

My students had a blast making a book by writing their own problems similar to those found in the book, The Math Curse. I read it to them and then asked them to think about how math was used in their daily lives. Some of them wrote really cute paragraphs and even did illustrations.

We just did "Bat Mobiles". We did a mobile using bats and whatever shape they wanted for the top of the mobile. Our topic was math properties. They had to write a property of multiplication on one side and an example and explanation on the other. They have made a cute decoration for Grandparent's Day this week too. (Mailbox Magazine last month had bat patterns that we used.)

We also do pocket books that have small books in each pocket. I use them for two digit and one digit multiplication and sometimes with division. Each step is described on one page. The kids seem to like doing them and decorating them. If you need directions on how to make the pocket book I can explain it to you.

I liked the idea of the students writing their own problems. Utilizing the word problems in the book definitely made it easier.

I had the students design a bedroom from scratch. They to pick paint, wallpaper, carpet, furniture, etc. They started by using area and perimeter to get dimensions and then found the prices of the things they desired. This project incorporate several math skills.
