I would like to know if you think I am making too big a deal of this please. Sorry so long!
I teach in the state PK program housed in a childcare facility. We had a staff meeting this week where other PK teacher and our assistants learned we are not going along with the district's calendar. We have to work 12/21-12/23 while they are out starting 12/18. My assistant is already off that week (she also works PK aftercare so needed to request off) - going to visit her family out of state and thought PK was out. The center is closed the following week, but that still only gives me 2 extra days with DD and DGD.
DD and DGD are arriving on 12/15 and leaving early 12/30. I was planning to be off after 12/18. They live 1800 miles away and we don't have the money to fly out often and see them. I have been angry since I learned this and yes, talked with my director who really only confirmed that yes, PK would be in session at our facility. I am beside myself upset. I would like to talk with her again and see if I can convince her to only provide childcare those days (the PK teachers have to be certified) but am afraid I might be making too big a deal of this. Do I needed to suck it up and let it go?
I think it would depend on whether or not it was assumed on your part, or if they had said you were following the district calendar and then changing it.
Some options: Can you try to negotiate a half day? Come in the morning and leave at nap time.
Do you have subs? Can you request any or all the days off?
I know the state requires a certain amount of hours for VPK.
This sounds like extremely poor planning on the part of the childcare center and I’m confused as to why their school calendar for VPK wouldn’t be out prior to now.
I would definitely be annoyed and would take days off as needed to be with family.
VPK programs in elementary schools around me follow the district calendar but I know that not all childcare centers do.
I agree with MalloryJames. I’d politely but firmly tell my boss that I’d made plans based on the District calendar and the plans can’t be changed, so I’ll be taking sick days when vacation was originally scheduled.
I would stand my ground. You based everything on current calendar. Unchangable plans. If you must, take the personal time. Your DD and GD are top priority right now.
Have you been working in the same position before? If so, did the preschool follow the district calendar in other years?
Who is your supervisor? It could make a difference if the administration is district or if it's state. If it's someone from the district, you would likely follow the district calendar.
There is probably some sort of written agreement between state and district, assuming that the district is involved in running the program. If it is totally state run, then district calendar is not relevant. Who issues your paycheck?
When I was teaching, I had students from two districts. We followed the calendar from the district that administered the program.
I hope you can get things worked out. Surprising that you were not given a calendar.
I'd be getting the time off one way or another. I didn't do what my heart said one time with time off and I still get mad at myself for allowing myself to be swayed by an administrator!
I'd very nicely ask for the time off and if not I'd be turning in my resignation! I know you like your job, but I'm sure there are other ones out there!
Your DD and Izzy will only be home for a short time. They changed the calendar. Take the days off. They’ll survive. You deserve a nice long holiday with your family!
