I got a letter from our board office that there has been a fraudulent unemployment claim made in my name. Whoever did it has my social security number and my DL number. There were 13 employees at my district who were all affected. Iím so angry!!! I have to call all three credit reporting agencies, my bank, my credit cards, etc, etc, etc. This could follow me forever.

Oh no! What a major headache and one of our worst fears. I just hate that there are people out in our world that just want to rip others off.

Put a freeze on your credit at all three credit bureaus.

I hope you have time to follow up with the district and ask what the plans are for repairing the problem for the employees. I'm sorry you and the other employees are affected.

It happened to me too. Don't forget to file a police report.

Also happened to me and it's been kind of a nightmare. My car window was smashed and purse stolen while I was at the park. My biggest concern is how to deal with this long term. Someone out there has everything they need to impersonate me . I did file a police report, put a hold on opening any utilities, filed a fraud alert with all 3 credit bureaus, canceled all my cards, and signed up for Lifelock. I wish that I knew what else I could do! My thoughts are with you- this is awful.

I wonder if you should also notify the IRS somehow. People have been known to file fraudulent tax returns to get a huge refund and then when you go to file it says you have already filed. Happened to a co-worker a few years ago.

I don't even understand how people can do this since they have no W-2s.They're just making up numbers in order to get a big refund. Where's the checks and balances in the system before the refund is given out???

ugh - I'm so sorry this happened to you!

This happened to my son when he was 16. We got a letter from the IRS saying he made more $ than he said on his tax form. Turns out someone used his SS# when he was around 10. We found out b/c the guy was trying to buy a house!! I did lots of research and found the company that hired the person, had to get a letter from them saying my son didn't work for them, etc. It was a nightmare but we did get it all squared away.

With that many people in your district facing the same problem, it seems possible that there was a security breach at or related to your district. Are they doing any investigation to determine where and how the information was leaked/stolen?

I think there are companies who can help you with this. If the breach occurred at the district level, they should be paying for it. When Target's red card credit card system was breached a number of years ago, all red card holders were notified and Target arranged for the monitoring to occur for a period of time. I was fortunate that my identify wasn't compromised, but it put me at ease to know it was being monitored.

Good luck with everything. What a nightmare for you!

Happened to me a few years ago. It was actually the SSA that informed me. It was a pain to deal with but fortunately has not affected me financially.

That happened to a bunch of people at my work about 5 months ago. There didn't seem to be any fallout for anyone, but they did have to go through a process of contacting several agencies (work provided a list of what to do). It was happening a LOT around here at many different agencies during that month or so.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I hope you are able to quickly make these calls and you don't experience any fallout from this. I hate that there are such unprincipled people in the world.

We had our SS#s and all the info on our tax returns stolen. We found out from the govt when someone else filed for a refund using our info. My DH contacted Life Lock and they took care of a lot of it, and gave us peace of mind. Your bank and credit cards need to be subscribed to their system, though.

Good. Luck! You have my sympathy.
