I've been offered a first grade position. I have taught 3rd for 15 years in private school. Then, for the past two years I've taught virtual charter school.

How do you do calendar time in first grade? Do you have a physical calendar, NOTD, etc., or do you do it all on virtual slides? Pros/cons for both ways, please.

My calendar time (in K, but also when I was in first) encompassed tons of math skills, not just the calendar. I always liked to have a physical calendar/math wall so kids could reference it when needed. Slides is nice for space, but I still like things they can see and manipulate, especially for younger kids.

I use a calendar in morning meeting. It’s the usual months, days of the week then I expand in that every month. I also use a calendar in math. We use calendar math that focus on math skills.

I have a physical calendar and NOTD chart. I train kids to set it up and lead it. I love my calendar time! Like PPs said, we use it for tons of math skills. What I love most is that it sets the tone for the day. We do it pretty much first thing and it signals that school has started.
Also, like others said, my kids reference skills there all day.

I used a physical calendar with base ten blocks. My students also wrote and drew on a calendar sheet before the class met to review the calendar. They brought their sheet to the carpet along with a lapboard and pencil. A well thought out calendar routine can strengthen math knowledge about base ten.
