I hired a painter to paint the inside of my house. Does he expect a tip over and above the agreed upon price?

My husband was a painter for years. Most people in the trades build a little cushion into their estimate for incidentals, so no need to tip!

Iíve never tipped, but if the work is during the summer I have set out a cooler with cold water for them.

I've never tipped a painter. I have offered up cold bottled water, and on day 3 of 4 I bought donut holes and left them on the counter for them. I told them it was to celebrate being almost done having to deal with me.

I guess weíre weird because we had our house painted last year. They guy we used was the lowest bid, removed a lot of wallpaper, and did a few repairs that werenít in the original quote. His crew was very grateful.

We donít generally tip that kind of work but we had some construction done last year and the workers were so diligent, worked in very adverse conditions, checked with us often to make sure they were doing what we wanted etc so we did tip them.

My painter got quite enough money out of me. I did have water bottles out for them and made brownies one day, but no tip. Same for other tradesmen who make way more than me.

Generally no. BUT, we hired our contractorís painter as a side job to paint our interior. (He was already there when we did the bathroom remodel and exterior painting.). He was a gem. I did tip him an extra $100 for all the work he did. And because he was nice.

was in the trades for many years....when anyone works in my home on the first day I set out
water and explain where the bathroom is. I leave paper towels out for them to wash their hands. If they are really good I tip "coffee money" for a quick job and a better tip if they are there for a few days.
