Filler ideas?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

This is my first time teaching primary (although 12th year teaching) and I had too much time (about 15 minutes) before lunch today (2nd day.) There wasn't enough time to read a book or start anything new (boy 1st graders take a long time doing ANYTHING!) and I felt they needed to get up and move around. Does anyone have any movement songs or other ideas? TIA

We use our body to say the alphabet. Tall letters like h, t, l we reach above our head or touch the sky. Short letters like s, a, e we touch our waist. Letters that drop below the line like y, g, p we touch our toes. We practice with the alphabte first and then later we will spell words.

As we say the alphabet we would touch each body part depending on what kind of letter it is.

Example: a touch waste, b touch sky, c touch waste, d touch sky, e touch waste, f touch sky, g touch toes, ect.

Example: spelling the word girl: g touch toes, i touch waste, r touch waste, l touch sky.

We say each letter as we make the body movement. It gets them up and moving, and they are having fun.

I taught 1st year after teaching 2nd and there actually was a huge difference. So I can't imagine how big a difference it is for you. In the beginning they are such babies that everything does take forever. As times goes on they will get quicker and your transitions will be more predicable. For those quick fillers I kept 2 things next to my seat on the carpet.

1. A chapter book. I always had an ongoing chapter book for right after lunch. However, when you have a few extra minutes you can just grab it and read form where ever you left off. If you don't get to the end of the chapter it doesn't matter and they don't even know. I love an old classic - My Father's Dragon

2.I keep my ipod speakers in school and downloaded some kids songs I could tolerate. Lot's of people buy the kids cd's. For many of them you can even just make up your own movements. Often my kids didn't need to actually get up and run around. SOme simple hand/body motions did the trick. SOme songs we liked were - Little Bunny Foo Foo, Baby Shark, The bear Song, Baby Bumblebee, Five Green and Speckled Frogs, Sticky Stick Bubblegum...Once the kids know them you can do them over and over. I was so overwhlemed that I would just make up motions as I played them. As long as I smiled and was in to it everyone was happy!

sight word practice(I use daily powerpoints beginning the second week)
letter sound practice (we use sfa so we call them "alphie sounds")
I would take the time prior to that 15 minutes(ie at some point mid morning) so that you work up til lunch and you give them a bit of a fun brain break
brain breaks are great as well. (cross lateral exersizes)

I will add. I am jealous that you had extra time. We are heading in to day 3 and are behind. Now granted we over planned lessons and under planned procedures time but I've put more into my procedures. The lessons will catch up.

My Father's Dragon is a great one! I have used that before! Do you have any others you might suggest? Thanks! =)

My class LOVES The Boxcar Children. We even made a 'museum' in our classroom like they do in book 2.

Check with your fellow 1st and Kindergarten teachers and see if any of them have Greg and Steve CDs. It's music w/instructions for simple movement.
By the way, in my opinion, there's always time for a book! :-) Even if you only read a page or 2, it gets them settled down!

I put on a song...
Kids circle around the classroom...
I call out movements, and they do them as they dance to the music.
Row Your Boat
Ride Your Bike
Vacuum
Play Basketball
Play Air Guitar
Soccer

I also LOVE the Down in The Valley CD
Available from the Responsive Classroom Website.
Songs w/ movements. Kids love it too.
