40 book challenge for 3rd?

This will be my first year to teach 3rd. I've taught 7th and 5th prior and have used the 40 book challenge with those grade levels. Have any of you used it in 3rd? I'm just wondering what parameters to set? With 5th, I had to make the stipulation that they had to be chapter books, b/c I had 5th graders trying to read picture books just to be done with it. However, I know that some 3rd graders are still reading picture books, so I don't know what parameters to set on that. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any and all info! If you have a letter you send home to parents to introduce it, I'd love to see that, as well!

The school I am being transferred to does the book challenge for the whole school... I would just set the parameters that the books have to be on their level. Third graders will read both picture (some are on third grade level) and chapter books all year (or at least most of it)... Hope that helps

Do you require certain numbers of books from different genres? If so, you can make picture books one of the genres or require a certain number of picture books or chapter books.

Thank you for posting this. I'm going to try this and I also passed it on to my teammates. Hopefully we can do this as a grade level.

Thank you what a wonderful idea to get the children to read different books.

30 book challenge

I did a 30 book challenge last school year. The one genre we had difficulty with was science fiction. It just seemed hard to find things for the reading level of the kids in my class, especially if they didn't like any of the leveled Star Wars books I had. So this year I'm going to remove that one.

The biggest challenge was keeping it at the forefront of students' minds so they didn't forget to work on it!

Good luck to you.

30 in 3rd

I've only done the 40 in 4th but am considering 30 in 3rd this year. I agree with pp that science fiction is difficult. I love to introduce the challenge with 'Nightmare at the book fair' by Dan Gutman. The main character has a book shelf fall on top of him and each chapter is based on a different genre. It's a great introduction to genres and is very funny.

but never got it up and running because it was too late in the year. I think I'm going to try the 30 in 3rd this year ... and I love the idea of introducing it with "Nightmare at the Book Fair." Thanks for the suggestion!
