Picture books in middle school

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone uses picture books at the middle school level. I'm a seventh grade L.A. teacher and am interested in using picture books with my kids. I have looked up some books to introduce genres, help the kids learn the literary elements, etc. Does anyone have any other ideas or recommendations of books?

Thanks!

Katie

I teach 7th grade social studies and 8th grade humanities. I read alound to my kids all of the time. I have a book, "Thank You, Mr. Falker" by Patricia Pollaco that I read at the beginning of the year. I also read to them several stories throughout the year that go along with my topics. I read "Show Way" by Jacqueline (um, can't remember the last name right now) for slavery. It's an excellent book about several generations of slave and free African-American women and their experiences told through quilting. I also read Chinese folk tales to my humanities class.

I also read a non-picture book to my humanities for about 15 minutes every day. It's called "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coehlo.

I love reading "The Great Quillow" aloud to older students (4th-7th or 8th).
