Picture books in Middle School

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello,

Do any of you use picture books in your middle school L.A. classrooms. I would like to use them to introduce units, genres, etc. and was wondering if anyone had ideas or book recommendations? I've checked out some of the other boards, but they all seem to be about elementary classrooms.

Thanks,

Katie

Bad Case of Stripes is an excellent book to teach students about bullies, or fitting and being themselves. It is a cute picture book, I did a lesson with students in 6th/7th grade and they really enjoyed it.

I use them all the time, especially to teach story elements.

I have used several, but I don't have enough time to use all of them every year. My three favorites are Aunt Isabel Tells a Good One for elements of a story, If You Give a Moose a Muffin for cause & effect, and The Paper Bag Princess in a story writing activity.

I bought two books on using storybooks in secondary classrooms. I got them from Amazon.

I also use them quite frequently, especially when illustrating writing traits.

I, too, use picture books in my middle school classroom. Many of the titles that you see posted can be adapted for your MS lessons. I use picture books to introduce science units, to teach story elements & even grammar. I also plan to use them this year with the 6 traits of writing--I know you can do a search and find a ton of titles that you could use in this area!
Good luck!

My favorite book to teach character traits is Miss Nelson is Missing. Students are familar with it, and it is great to compare Miss Nelson with Miss Swamp!

I am an SS middle school teacher and I use picture books all of the time to relate elements of a historical event that are emotional or hard to get across. My kids love it!
