crate seats told no

I made a class set of crate seats for my students, had my principal come to my room to see them and the principal said I couldn't have them in my room. The principal said there weren't any backs and was concerned about their safety. Has this happened to anyone else?

Oh, that's horrible! All that work you did only to be told they aren't safe because of no back? I have several tables with stools, crate seats don't seem any different. Are you allowed stools in your school? Maybe you could present that similarity to your principal.

Sorry this has happened to you.

Sounds like they are very cool!

Can you say how you made them? Were they like crates you'd purchase at Wal-Mart, or something else? Can you use them in your classroom in another area? I'm assumming your principal meant that for daily work the students would need to have a real chair.

I'm thinking about taking some paint buckets and making them into some special seating for reading groups. My plan is to paint them, then put pillows on top.

I'd love to see a pic of your crates

Thanks everyone!

I'm very disappointed over the whole thing, but hoping it will somehow get resolved. The principal is checking with the district safety person. I think the principal is just trying cover "their" butt. Thank you for the idea about the stools..there are no policies on stools. I also thought about the exercise balls that a lot of teachers have in their classrooms. Thanks for your support! I just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case it happens to them.

I hope this does get resolved. If other teachers use the exercise balls then I would think you should be alright. At least your crates don't move around like a ball would.

I don't know if you made your crates where you can take the tops off but if you did, maybe you can still use them as storage around the room. Sorry this happened to you.

I hope you're allowed to use them. If I were you I would have had to bite my tongue when I was told I couldn't use them. I would have wanted to quip, "It's a good thing I decided not to make the crates at bar stool-height with wheels on the bottom!"

Could you push them up against the wall? Or have the students sit back to back? I am so sorry for you, all that hard work!

That's a bummer! You could always sell them? I am sure somebody would love to have them.

There's a school near here that has one teacher who had her students sit on balls at their desks instead of chairs. They definitely have no backs and they MOVE! She's really enjoyed using them. To me, crate chairs seem perfectly safe in comparison.

As I read this all I can say is that I'm so sorry!!! What an ignorant comment to say they are unsafe... Principals never cease to amaze me. What an idiot! I would put them in my room and use them anyway. It's no more of a hazard than the broken desks and chairs that they refuse to remove from my classroom. Or the broken ceiling tile that falls from my ceiling every now and then. Good grief!

I'll bet all of the students enjoy leaning on the backs of those seats in the cafeteria.

OMG....thank you! I forgot all about the benches they sit on in the cafeteria! I'll have to talk to the principal about that one. Thank you, thank you!

Benches

I was going to mention the benches that we use in the lunchroom. There are no backs on them. I see someone else also thought of the benches.

I am making the crate seats for my reading area. I don't anticipate any problems, but thanks for the heads up.

Sorry that you can't use yours after all the work of making them.
