Hi! I was just moved to 5th grade after being in the primary grades for 6 years. I.m in a private school and there are 2 5th grades. I will be teaching 2 subjects and the other teacher will do the same. Any suggestions for behavioral management? I am running out of time and not sure what to do. In primary I did a flip cards, and at end of the day they got a punch. 20 punches equaled a prize from treasure chest. I want to reward kids but don't want to spend $$. Any help I can get is much appreciated ,,,, Many Thanks!

Hi,
Welcome to 5th! I suggest you try out Classroom Dojo. Just goggle it! I moved to 5th from many years in primary last year and Dojo worked great with my big kids!! I created a large dojo rewards sheet for my kiddos which they earned rewards for when earning certain number of dojo points. I had lots of rewards that were cheap or no cost at all such as swap seats with a friend, take your shoes off in class, wear a hat in class, eat lunch with a friend and the teacher, extra computer time, extra recess, etc. I'm attaching my dojo rewards sheet that I created last year.

Do you have a smart board? you don't need one to use dojo but it is helpful. Best of luck to you.

We use a clipboard system that travels with the class. We have codes that we use such as:

1= Calling out/not raising hand.
2= not keeping hands, feet, objects or rude remarks to self.

We use an H for homework not complete.

At the end of the week we send home conduct grades that have to be signed and returned (It is a mini sheet of the rules with tally marks next to them. Each mark is 5 points. They start with 100 points each week).

Then I enter their weekly grade into the grade book and it helps me determine their quarterly conduct grade. Hope this helps!

I almost forgot. I award 2 tickets to those with a 100 grade and 1 ticket for 90-95. Then I draw 5 names every other week for rewards similar to the chart that was posted above.

Last year I went from first to fifth. I did not use any "tricks" for management. No clip chart, no tickets, no dojo, no punch cards. I told kids when they were doing well, and I talked with students who were not. Pulled out some responsibility sheets and used them with those kids who were not following directions or being rude. Didn't take any time at all for them to understand what was required and then I didn't have to waste my time and energy on rewards or upkeep.
