Does anyone have any great things that you do for 5th grade social studies when you finish the curriculum? I don't think I have ever had time to finish the curriculum before, and I want something fun to do for the next 4-5 weeks.

You could revisit some of your topics and do simulations with them. I've also shown parts of "America the Story of Us" from the History Channel.

You could review map skills.

You could also have your students plan a vacation for their family...where to go, how to get there (bus, train, airplane, car), hotels/motels, and tourist attractions once they get there (and if taking a car/bus/train, places to stop along the way).

Your students will make a daily schedule for this vacation (just like if they were taking a tour). You might want to have examples of tour agendas (or better yet, model it for the class using your own vacation plans or have a person from a local travel agency make a presentation).

Your students will need to use the internet to find out of the cost of hotels/motels, cost of transportation (airfare, gas for auto, bus fare, train fare, etc.), and cost of attractions.

If you have access to PowerPoint, they can do this project in it and then present it to the class. This vacation does not need to stay in the U.S. They could go to a country in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, or even Antarctica.

Bad Wolf Press is a great source for Social Studies related plays.

You could make a picture timeline summarizing everything you've learned.

I only wish I could finish just one curriculum my district gives me!

End of Year Ideas
Timeline- Like OWL98 posted but you could have groups of kids make a timeline for each topic you learned about. At the end you could put them all together.

Research- They could do a deep dive into any topic, event or person related to a topic they learned. It would be like a SS Genius Hour.

Book Making- Take a topic and make a graphic novel or picture book to share with a younger class.

Wax museum. They research, create a backdrop and dress up as a historical figure. They also prepare a 1 minute snippet and recite it while dressed as their character.

Thanks for all of the great ideas. My kids want to learn about some new things that we did not cover in SS this year. I am going to put together some topics and choice boards so they can do an independent study and they present it to the class. They are excited to do this.
