Random question: my darling niece has found (after much searching) a sport she likes a lot and has started playing field hockey for a local club in seventh grade. In my area, there arenít any field hockey clubs and kids only start playing in high school. Anyone (or someone in your family) have experience playing field hockey? When did you start!

In the last century field hockey was a regular fall sport in girl's PE class. We ran the dusty field in our white Keds, PF Flyers, or Red Ball Jets. Those sneakers had no arch supports which may be why that generation of women have knee issues. We risked detention if the sticks went over our shoulders. Optrd out my senior year 1966 for swim team.

DD started playing in 6th grade and fell in love! It's gaining popularity around here. A bunch of the Catholic schools start in elementary and I think the clubs start around age 8. It's turning into an expensive year-round sport. And DH is too cheap to let her do the club teams. She just does stuff with her own school team off season (local leagues and tourneys) and skills clinics.

DD started playing in 7th grade. She played all through high school and is now playing in college. She loves it but I still feel lost watching her games. Having never played, I donít understand the rules, even after watching her play for 7 years!

I played field hockey my sophomore and junior years of high school. 1974-76. We had 4 other teams in our conference. I thinking we played them twice. It was so fun!

We start them early!

Both the district I teach in and the district I live in have Field Hockey camps starting in early elementary grades. Girls start playing in 1st or second grade.

Many towns have a Rec. department that has camps in the summer coached by high school players.

We also have travel teams for girls in the late elementary years (4th and 5th).

My younger DD started playing in 4th grade and is now on the Middle School team.
