Dilemma with Reading Groups

I'm a student teacher in a second grade classroom. My teacher's routine is set so that reading groups only meet once a week. I'm not happy with this, but since I'm only going to be there a few more weeks I'm trying not to rock the boat TOO much. I am branching out and trying things they don't usually do, but I don't what to disrupt her whole schedule since I'll be done in 8 weeks anyway.
I have limited time to meet with the groups. It's technically a 90 minute block but by the time we walk back from P.E.... kids get water... etc, we lose like 15 minutes. Then I have to explain to the kids what they're doing today or teach a mini-lesson.
I'm just looking for some insight into making this work. What is worthwhile to do only once a week?
