What are your experiences with the PBIS classroom management plan? Specifically how has extrinsic motivation and punishment worked for you in your experience? Has anyone tried any different classroom management plans? If so, what were they and how successful were they in your experience?

I've experienced the good and the incredibly awful of PBIS.

Basically, it came down to implementation and admin support (or not).

When well implemented, it works for average kids. I have not seen it be effective with any severe behavior problems. Behavior matrices help both teachers and children know what is expected.

When poorly implemented, it leads to many of the posts on The Vent. Students know there will be no consequences masquerading as "restorative practice."

I use Classcraft. Students enjoy it, and it allows me to customize for the behaviors I want to emphasize.

live school is also an option. I have used Class Dojo with younger grades and found it helpful. My particular group of students does well with the live school.
