Taking another teacher's class.

One of my grade-level partners called in this morning. We have no subs, so the class was split between myself and the third grade level teacher.
This is the 3rd or 4th time, but this time was AWFUL! The students are so incredibly disrespectful. I can't believe how they are acting!
HOnestly, I gave up about halfway through a Language Arts lesson, and put them all on Lexia for the rest of the time.
Not worth the $100 addenda we get for taking another teacher's class.

You get extra for a split? Count me in - at my old school we had splits nearly every day; four or five kids, any age, dumped on you for the day.

The kids see it as a day off, no matter what you do. Iím not sure what Lexia is, but if it got you to the end of the day, itís all good.

Iím with Tiamat- Iíve had classes split many times, and never gotten paid. $100 for the day would be awesome!

"If it got you to the end of the day, it's all good. "

Nothing more is needed!

P.S. Seriously, really good advice.

In my 16 years of teaching, this is the 1st year this has happened at our school. So far, I've had to take on an additional 12 kids, twice! No extra $$, either!

My fave activity is "silent conversation". They get to know other kids from the other class, they are writing, busy, and best of all it is SILENT!

Wow! I wish we got paid extra!

I don't want to be one upping you. But, two weeks ago the 2nd grade teacher was out. I got 5 of her kids that were out of control! They came with "work" with was a apparently to use markers and to write low notes. They also all came in with slime. My admin decided that would be a great time for an evaluation! She confronted me in my lesson when I had to pause (for like the 10th time) to address the issues going on. She said it was obvious I didn't have control of the classroom and my students were distracted and not paying attention. I am not a go off on a person type of person, but that day I just about did!

Sorry you had the rough day but buy yourself something special with the extra money.

Thank goodness for union contracts!

It's in our contract that we get compensated for covering a class. $30/hr if one teacher takes the whole class, $20/hr if two teachers split the class, and so on.
We also get $30/hr if we miss planning time because of meetings, etc.

IT was mostly one kid who was the problem. He got louder each time.
"Can I go to the nurse?" Are you bleeding or puking? "No." Then no.
"Can I call my mom to come pick me up?"(like right then) "No."
"Can I go to the counselor???"No
"YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I AM GOING THROUGH RIGHT NOW!!!!" Yes, I do. You are upset because I won't let you do whatever you want.
