Keyboarding Skills - What Software???

Clip to ScrapBook #1

This will be my first year teaching computers and I know that developing keyboarding skills are a must. However, I am not sure which software would be the best. In previous years, keyboarding was only emphasized in the junior levels. I am teaching grades 7 and 8 - possibly some 6. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a few possibilities:

http://jeffcoweb.jeffco.k12.co.us/is...eybo/keydx.htm
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/
http://www.uen.org/cc/uen/core/pub/d...35&itemId=1153

NOTE: The UEN link has multiple options

Hope this helps

this site - http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/
Dance Mat Typing - 4 levels
Since it is online they can do from home too ... and best of all, it's free

Oh, just saw you are middle school - I'm 4th it might be a little juvenile for your age group...

Have used the programs above and our school paid for them. Liked them and they do give the teacher control and progress reports on a .dat file. I have read about the following free programs and am going to be giving them a try:
I haven't yet but I recently signed up for Typing Web through the Teacher Portal http://www.typingweb.com/teacherportal/. I have also signed up for http://www.learn2type.com/Schools/ and http://www.sense-lang.org/typing/class/.

tharlan, are you going to use one programme for all the grade levels? As you are evaluating these other programmes, what is the criteria you use to determine which is best?

I start formal keyboarding lessons in the second half of second grade so I will be using Type to Learn 4 for those students. Many complete the program in third or fourth grade so I will place them in Mavis Beacon next. I looked at the web-based programs and I like typingweb.com the best and will use that for fifth and sixth grades this coming year. The programs are the best way to keep the students on track...no adds. I would try to use a program for your first year!
