Literacy Coaches - how does your district pay

Our district is exploring hiring literacy coaches for our four elementaries. Most schools that we know of pay them through the Reading First Initiative. We are not a Reading First school. Do any of you out there have literacy coaches that are paid out of other funds? I am on the committee to explore this option. If you have any ideas, I would really appreciate them.

Thanks.

Hi,
I am a literacycoach formy school district and I get paid out of the regular school funds (much like a teacher). I was a coach for the state and traveled to various schools, but that was a state paid job. Our math coaches are responsible for 1 grade and they travel to different schools in the district and support their grade. I work in an Abbott District (poor urban) and we get extra funds. Literacy coaching is such a great resource for a school to have in place! The Children's Literacy Initiative has on site coaching and we also have a grant through their organization, but you need to use their coaches. If it is in a location near you I would highly recommend their services. They will come out and coach, do grade level meetings, and professional developement workshops. We received our funding through a grant offered by Wachovia Bank.

Good luck!

3 of our 6 Lit coaches are paid through reading first. The others I am not sure but think they are paid out of Title I funds. We are a Title I school. We have 2 more years left of our grant so I don't know what will happen after that comes to an end.

Our state provides funding to districts for "at-risk" students who are below grade level. Our district uses the funds for staff who work directly with these students, as well as a district position to facilitate these and other literacy programs for K-2 students and teachers.

they are considered classroom teachers out of our general fund and are eligible for transfer to a regular classroom should they choose to apply for a transfer.

half and half

Our literacy coach was paid via the Reading First grant. Now, the school has to pay half, and Reading First pays the other half.

I think that it's a waste of money to pay someone that goes to more professional development than staying on campus.
