Do you guys have any great ideas for the first few days of school? Cool icebreakers? Interesting writing assignments? Procedures that can't be overlooked? I am teaching high school this year and the population is special needs. I need all the help and inspiration I can get!

Try playing games like 2 Truths and a Lie or games that make the kids think and also introduces them to their classmates. I always do that game.

You could do:

Journals
Puzzles
Pre test
Have them write a letter to you about their strengths and weakness as a student.
Create a goal statement

This is my first year teaching high school. I'm going to do an ice breaker called Two extremes. You post two things that are polar opposites and the students choose which one they like better. It's like the would you rather game. I'm going to pass around a dish of skittles and let the kids take as much as they like. But they have to tell us one thing about themselves for every skittle. I'm also doing find a friend bingo.
