I just had an assignment from September 16 turned in on Google Classroom. No way am I even looking at it. It was a response to a book I read the class. This is second grade and we have standards based report cards so it really only matters if you have reached the standard by the end of the marking period. On most of these assignments, I just put a comment. Hard to grade when parents help with so much.

But to hand it in now? Instead of submitting that, maybe the parent could have signed up for a conference. They are Tuesday through Thursday this week.

I get it. On a bright note, a parent must have had to follow through for this! That is good.

Maybe just a note that says, "Though this assignment is late, I appreciate the effort."

Many of the older assignments in our classrooms are turned in without completing. It just gets it out of the students "not done" list.

Although I am getting better with it, I really hate Google classroom. I teach high school and have kids hybrid 2 days in person and 4 days in person and also full remote. I decided to start grading missing assignments with a zero to get them out of the student's to do list to discourage them from turning it in after it is too late for me to grade it. I wish there was a way to zap the old assignments out for a student who just added the class as I never thought I'd have kids switching remote and hybrid so frequently. I have separate Google classrooms for each group within a class. The students really stress seeing "missing " assignments even if I say don't do anything before a certain date.

Google Classroom is stupid this way. It's impossible to "archive" assignments, so on the kid's side, they still see "assignment such and such is due".

You can make a suggestion to Google that they allow archiving. This would help so much. Right now you can only delete assignments, but for teachers like me who are being micromanaged, deleting is the exact same thing as "the teacher never assigned any work in Google Classroom because we don't see anything". I wish we could archive assignments so there is still a record of them, but the kids can't access them.

Make sure you make a note for kids every so often that says, "I will no longer accept work from before such-and-such date" so you have a paper trail when parents complain you didn't accept late work that still showed as an open assignment on their end.
