MP3 players for listening center

Clip to ScrapBook #1

For Daily 5, I use books on MP3 for our Listening to Reading choice. I've used Fisher Price FP3 players the past three years and I'm ready to get new MP3 players since our computers are just too slow to support the FP3 uploads and software. I'm looking for ones that are cheap, easy for young students to use (I teach first), and that are easy for me to change the audio books on.

Does anyone have good brand recommendations and where they found them? I heard Scholastic had/has $8 ones on clearance but can't find those. Under $20 each would be AMAZING if that's possible (I need 4).

Thanks!

The Shuffles only have play, forward, backward, and volume so they're easy to use. They're on e-bay for around $25.00. So, close to your budget! Only down side, they can very easily fit in a pocket.

I've been lucky and have found Sansa Clip 4 GB MP3 players on either Woot.com or 1saleaday.com. I got them for less than $12 which included shipping. Problem is that you have to wait until they become available on the site.

how to find scholastic mp3 players
Old 06-13-2010, 06:03 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #5

go to scholastic.com
click to place an order
log in
click on Club Shop
on the left side under "Don't Miss" click on clearance
go to the 3rd page, second to bottom row

They are only $8. I ordered 6 of them for my class about 2 months before school got out. My kids loved them. (It took me awhile to find them on the site at first too.)

Awesome find! I just ordered 5! Question though, do you use the ear buds that come with or do you get regular headphones? I worry about using ear buds with multiple children.

Kids bring their own

Most of my kids don't like the ear buds, and they don't fit well. I thought the idea of kids sharing ear buds was just too gross for me (I never let my own children eat off my fork or drink from my glass either). I picked up some headphones from Dollar Tree for the few who don't bring them. Most of the kids did though. I put them in plastic baggies marked with their name and put them in a crate.

Thanks for the tip about finding the Scholastic MP3 players! I just ordered 5! I have a Mac at home and Windows at school - have you found one is easier to use with the CD they include? Do you need to use the included CD in order to put music on the MP3 player, or can you use something like iTunes?

Thanks for asking this question! And Ria, thanks for posting about Scholastic--I have been looking for cheap MP3 players all year, and these will be great for next year--you are all so great!

Putting stories/songs on
Old 06-14-2010, 03:48 PM

I have all of my books on tape and books on CD converted to mp3. I used garage band to do that. You can use audacity too (free download). I didn't have to use the disc that came with it. It was very easy to put the stories onto the mp3 players.

Thank you for the tip about using GarageBand to put cassette stories into MP3. Do you import your audiobooks into iTunes and use that to upload songs onto the players? I've only ever used an iPod with iTunes so I wasn't sure if there were compatibility issues.

Questions
Old 06-15-2010, 09:03 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #13

I have a couple of questions about these mp3 players:

Is that a little window that would show the title of the books that are loaded on it?
Do they eat up batteries very quickly?

I have 3 Coby mp3 players - had 4 and I walked away :-( - and they have a window that shows the titles, a feature which I think is indispensible! And they hook into the computer via USB to recharge, thus no battery costs, but they did cost $20 each and I would love to get something cheaper so I could have more! So let me know!
